The Nest API, which allows developers to integrate with and control Nest smart home devices like thermostats and cameras, was initially developed by Nest Labsa company founded by former Apple engineers Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. Following the release of their first product, the Nest Learning Thermostat, in 2011, the API became a key component of Nest’s ecosystem. After Google acquired Nest, the API was integrated into the broader Google ecosystem, offering expanded functionality and access to a wider range of devices through the “Device Access” platform.
Nest was among the first service providers to pioneer the use of HTTP APIs beyond traditional web and mobile applications, leveraging lightweight JSON APIs to power connected devices. This innovation played a pivotal role in sparking the Internet of Things (IoT) era, which continues to evolve today. While the IoT landscape has not fully realized the ambitious visions of some early developers and startups, Nest demonstrated how APIs could transform everyday objects in our homes, introducing a new way to integrate the Internet into daily life.
